An English mahogany longcase clock with rocking ship
With brass ball and spire finials to pagoda top with fretwork panel, dentil cornice mouldings, outset reeded columns with cast gilt-brass Corinthian capitals, small glazed side panels, the breakarch trunk door flanked by conforming half columns, later brass door knob, on plinth with quatreform mouldings, the 12in. wide brass dial with florally engraved spandrels to Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the centre with recessed seconds disc and date aperture, signed Joseph Marder/PORTSMOUTH, pierced and blued steel hands, the arch with painted seascape backdrop to rocking ship (replaced), the eight day five pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, now lacking trip repeat, later cheekboards and replaced seatboard; dial and movement associated to case; last quarter 18th century -- 88in. (223cm.) high
