Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for the attribution, given on inspection of the original; he dates the work to fairly late in the artist's career, following the artist's presumed departure from Antwerp in the late 1650s, and possibly painted in France. The coat-of-arms would appear to be a later addition, presumably painted over another image.
