Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Stella Rudolph for suggesting this attribution on the basis of photographs. Dr Rudolph compares this picture stylistically with two others by the artist: The Assumption of the Virgin in the Villa Sora Buoncompagni's Chapel, Frascati and The Raising of Lazarus in the Lemme Collection, Rome.
Ricciolini was probably inspired by a painting of the same subject, in a vertical format, executed by Ciro Ferri in 1684, now located in San Lorenzo's Church, near Rome. Ferri's composition was engraved by Bloemaert during his stay in Rome and Dr. Eric Schleier has kindly noted that the composition was also taken up in two pictures usually attributed to Giuseppe Chiari (previously in the Walpole Gallery, London).
