Lot Essay

Drawn in preparation for an illustration to the Abbé de Saint-Non's Voyage pittoresque..., a collaborative project illustrated by a number of artists including Desprez, Fragonard and Robert with a descriptive text written by Baron Dominique Vivant-Denon and published in four volumes between 1781 and 1786. A plein-air study from which this finished drawing was worked up is in the Kunglig Akademien för de fria Konsterna, Stockholm (P. Lamers, op. cit., no. 186a).
