Lot Essay

Another portrait of Madame Séguier, also in pastel but rectangular in format was sold in Paris on 19 December 2001, lot 88. The sitter was the wife of Antoine-Louis Séguier (1726-1792), descendant of the famous Chancelier Séguier. After the death of her husband, she married Monsieur de la Bastide.
Kucharski, originally from Poland, studied in Italy before travelling to Paris in 1762. There he studied with Vien and Carle Vanloo and painted a portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette. One of his pastels is at the Louvre (G. Monnier, Pastels du XVIIème et XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1972, no. 56).
