The cartouches show scenes from the uprisings in Rotterdam in 1786, in which Langendyck himself participated. The artist depicts himself clutching a rifle and attended by Mars and Apelles.

Zourmaalen. Toen: pleegde hy het eerst met al de furies raad; Irly schetstetwreed hafreel vol viuir, met al Iyn kwaalen Mars zaghet schrikte en sprak: Men ga Apelles haalen, "Dat hij die Fenix schetse in Schutterlijk gevaad."
