In 1632 Van Dyck started work in London as court painter to King Charles I. From 1632 until his death in 1641 he was mostly occupied with portraits of the English nobilty. Bennert depicts the moment when Van Dyck painted 'Charles I at the Hunt' in 1635. Van Dyck portays the monarch when he had just dismounted from his horse. The original is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. 1236.
