Lot Essay

François Christophe de Kellerman was born in Wolfsbuchweiler in Alsace in 1735 and died in Paris in 1820. His Artillery defence at the Moselle in 1792 demoralised the Prussians. He was created Marshal and Duc de Valmy by Napoleon, commanded the Rhine Reserve in 1809 and 1812. At the Restoration he attached himself to the Bourbons. His son, François Étienne (1770-1835) led the charge at the battle of Marengo (1800).
