Lot Essay

Like furniture manufacturers J. & J. Kohn, silvermakers Alexander Sturm & Co. recognized Hoffmann's talent while he was still teaching at the Kunstegewerbeschule. In 1902, Sturm began producing and marketing a range of extraordinary designs by Hoffmann, including cups, trophies, vases and, more conventionally, cutlery.
The present salt would appear to be part of a set, the mustard pot for which is illustrated: Viennese Silver. Modern Design 1780 -1918, Michael Huey, ed., Neue Galerie exhibition catalogue, New York, October 17, 2003 - February 16, 2004, No. 104, p. 168.
