Lot Essay

Franz von Zulöw designed textiles, fans, painted boxes and wallpaper for the WW, as well as the present portfolio. He was also commissioned to design a stencilled frieze for the nursery at the Palais Stoclet, which was ultimately rejected by Stoclet.
The ink sketch by Emmy Zweybrück also included in this lot (illustrated left) poignantly records a moment in time when thousands of Austrian Jews began a massive emigration to America to avoid the growing oppression from Nazi Germany.
