Lot Essay

According to the Secret Intelligence interview, initially various explanations were considered to account for George Lazenby replacement of his predecessor, Sean Connery, and the resulting difference in appearance between the two men -- including a suggestion that Bond had undergone plastic surgery! Eventually, Richard Maibaum decided such discussions were ridiculous and that they should stick to a tongue-in-cheek line in the script such as "I'm not like the other guy", hence, the changes to the original script which appear on page 7 in both copies of the script in this lot.

Peter Hunt recalled great discussions with Saltzman and Broccoli regarding the final scene of the film where Tracy [Diana Rigg] is shot. Despite this scene being in Fleming's book, Saltzman and Broccoli were apparently not keen on including it in the film but, anxious to keep faithful to Fleming's version, Hunt insisted it be kept in the film, to great effect. He also deliberately shot the scene in such a way that it could possibly be used as a pre-title sequence to the subsequent Bond film in the series.
