Early 19th-century straight-grained purple morocco, central gilt emblem stamp on covers, gilt edges, yellow endpapers (light rubbing to joints and edges). Provenance: Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823, with his initials "MMS Sledmere" on verso front free endpaper); Cambridge, Library of the Episcopal Theological School (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. The third and longest part is an early Biography of Thomas More, "The Life and Illustrious Martyrdom of Sir Thomas More, formerly Lord Chancellor of England..." The biography is based on accounts and family documents preserved by Dorothy Colly, Margaret More's maid, and the wife of John Harris, More's secretary. Adams S-1662.
