[ADAMS, John Quincy, et al.] A BOOK OF CONGRESSIONAL AUTOGRAPHS, CIRCA 1844. Autograph book of Moses G. Leonard, n.d. 8vo, green leather covers, 39 leaves, approximately 182 signatures. Former President, and Congressional crusader against slavery, John Quincy Adams, heads the list of legislators who signed Leonard's little green book. A Whig Party representative from New York elected to the 28th Congress in 1842, Leonard probably decided to compile this momento upon his departure from Washington, after failing to win re-election in 1844. Most signers were fellow Whigs, or fellow freshmen from the "class" of 1843. There are some notable Democrats too, such as Illinois's freshman Congressman, Stephen A. Douglas (who signed as "S.A. Douglas, Quincy, Illinois"). Other signators include John A. McClernand, John Slidell (later a Confederate diplomat), Caleb B. Smith, Hamilton Fish, and Howell Cobb.
