SIX DAYS BEFORE THE GEETYSBURG OBSERVANCES. 1 page, 8vo, small hole near bottom edge. Meade writes this note to his wife, waiting him at 2037 Pine Street, Philadelphia: "Meet me at Willard tomorrow; bring Pennie." A postcript note reads: "Mr. Caldwell will please forward this & get operator at Phila. to acknowledge." While Meade meets with his wife in Philadelphia, he notably absents himself from President Lincoln's appearance in Gettysburg to dedicate the Gettysburg national cemetery on 19 November 1863. The General may have been displaying his unhappiness over Lincoln's chastisements after the Battle of Gettysburg, when Lincoln bitterly complained about Meade's failure to pursue and destroy Lee's army. Meade's post-Civil War career would bring him back to Philadelphia for good, as he took command of the Division of the Atlantic, which was headquartered there.
