Stone, the accomplished engraver who spent years to engrave what remains the best and most important facsimile of the Declaration of Independence (se previous lot), orders ink: "Please send me one barrel of your best quality Frankfort Black [ink] like the last...." Frankfort Black is a rich black ink made from burning grape vine twigs, and widely used in copperplate printing.
