A LINCOLN NAVAL COMMISSION

Lincoln's Naval commission are quite considerably rarer that the relatively numerous Army appointments. Here, President Lincoln and Secretary Welles appoint William W. McKean Commodore in the Navy, on the Retired List, from 16 July 1862. After enlisting as a midshipman at age 14, McKean served in the Mediterranean, the West Indies, and off the Coast of South America, before commanding a vessel of his own in the Mexican War.
