Lot Essay

Jan II condenses the story of the Creation into three pictures. In the first panel he represents the first four days: God creates Day and Night, the waters under the firmament, dry land, the earth, grass and trees, the evening and morning; in the second panel God creates fish and fowl (fifth day) and in the last panel He creates 'the beast of the earth' and 'man in our image, after our likeness'(sixth day).

Jan Breughel II treated the subject of the Paradise landscape and the Creation on several occasions. The style and technique of the present pictures, as well as the way in which the signature is written, would seem to correspond with pictures of these subjects painted by the mature Jan Breughel II in circa 1650 (see, for example, K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere, Freren, 1984, nos. 106-25).
