The primary version of this subject is Canaletto's painting of 1728-9, one of a pair of pictures painted for Hugh Howard that passed by descent to the Earls of Wicklow, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (W.G. Constable, Canaletto. Giovanni Antonio Canal 1697-1768, 2nd Ed., revised by J.G. Links, London, 1989, I, no. 166, pl. 37; II, pp. 256-66). The present picture includes more of the building of the Dogana on the left and more of the shadowed side of the palace on the right together with a greater part of the barge passing in front of it. In this respect, it may be more indebted to another version of the Houston picture with the same extensions at the sides that was last recorded in 1954 in the collection of Rocchetti, and dated by Links to circa 1730 (loc.cit.). The tonal affinities shared by all three versions, suggest that the present picture was painted with first hand experience of either the Houston or Rocchetti canvases.
