William Angerstein inherited the substantial group of family portraits assembled by his ancestor, the financier, John Julius Angerstein (1735-1823), the core of whose collection was acquired for the National Gallery, London on its foundation. The latter's son John Angerstein M.P. (1773-1858), also seems to have been a significant collector.
