Lot Essay

After training in Cologne under Johann Hulsmann, Johann Franz Ermels travelled to Holland where he came under the influence of Jan Both and other Dutch Italianates. Later, under the influence of Wilhelm van Bemmel, for whose landscapes he occasionally provided figures, Ermels executed delicate, idealistic landscapes, such as the present painting.
