A SELECTION OF WORKS OF ART FROM HUYS TEN DONCK, RIDDERKERK
The pair of fauteuils (lot 453a) and the fire-screen (lot 454) are part of the same suite of seat-furniture sold in these rooms in the Dutch Interior, 28 September 2000, lots 342-345.
In his journal, jonkheer W.G. Groeninx van Soelen (1880-1963), recalls that his great grandfather bought a suite of furniture, to furnish his house at the Lange Voorhout 38 in the Hague, from the firm of J.A. Schick and Co. in 1827. The set was taken to Huys ten Donck in 1924, which untill then, had been the family's summer residence.
Johannes Abraham Schick, (1750 Neukirchen, Nassau-Dillenburg-1829 the Hague), became a master chairmaker in 1790. He was joined by his son Johan Georg (?-1862) from which time onwards they worked under the name of Schick & Co. They were amongst the most important furniture-makers in The Hague at the beginning of the 19th Century. King William I comissioned several suites of seat-furniture from Schick for his palace on the Noordeinde in the Hague, the first being delivered in 1817.
