This relief of the sleeping Endymion was a popular classical theme copied during the 18th and 19th century and sold to Grand Tourists. John Flaxman paired this subject with Persus releasing Andromeda, after purchasing the plaster casts directly from the Capitoline.
A pair of Italian carved marble reliefs, circa 1800 were sold Christie's, London, 12 June 2003, lot 196.
