Lot Essay

The monogram is that of Julia Marlowe Sothern (1865-1950). Julia Marlowe Sothern and her husband Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) were well-known Shakespearean actors. They were also among Stone's best clients, commissioning over 100 pieces. This wine goblet was one of six produced for the Sotherns. Three goblets are now in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A beaker and cocktail shaker bearing the monogram of Julia and Edward Sothern, respectively, are offered in these Rooms, lots 34 and 45.
