WETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT AREA, 1750-1780

Among the scalloped-top furniture from Connecticut, small tables with a single drawer are particularly rare; only three similar examples are known. The first example is in the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery, illustrated in David Barquist, American Tables and Looking Glasses, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, 1992, no. 38, pp. 114-116. The second example is illustrated in Wallace Nutting, Furniture Treasury Volumes I and II, 1928, no. 1261, and the third in Michael K. Brown, "Scalloped-top furniture of the Connecticut River Valley", The Magazine Antiques, (May, 1980) pp. 1092-1099. A five-drawer dressing table with nearly identical scalloped skirt and top is in the collections of the Wadsworth Atheneum (See John T. Kirk et al, Connecticut Furniture, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, [Hartford, Connecticut, 1967], no. 162, p. 93).
