Lot Essay

A remarkable discovery, this previously unknown vase was part of a five-piece garniture owned by George and Martha Washington. Five blue and white "Jarrs" were inventoried in the sweetmeat closet after Mrs. Washington's Death. The other four examples are in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution (see Susan Detweiler, George Washington's Chinaware (New York, 1982) Plate 149).
