Lot Essay

The August 1759, "Invoice of goods shipped by R. Cary on acct. of Col. George Washington" records the purchase of "1 pair Seasons, & 1 pair Music's figures" for 1 pound 1 shilling. The "Seasons" figures are among the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association collections; the "musicians" were previously unlocated. These four figures accompanied a two pairs of "Branches and Candlesticks with flowers" ordered by Washington in May, 1759 (see Detweiler, p. 44 and plate 26 and 28).
