Daniel Balch, Jr. (1761-1835) was part of a large tradition of clockmaking in Essex County, Massachusetts, starting in the early part of the eighteenth century and continuing into the middle of the nineteenth century. His father, Daniel Balch, Sr. (1735-1789) probably received his training from Richard Manning (1710-1774), David Blaisdell (1712-1756) or either Samuel (1720-1756) or Nathaniel (1722-1767) Mulliken; these four families were instrumental in establishing Essex County as a clockmaking center.
