Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern was a lifelong rebel, spending numerous stints at correctional and psychiatric institutions. During one of his incarcerations in 1930, he met an artist who inspired him to begin making his own work. "Much of his work explores a private mythology dominated by monstrous and diabolical figures; scatology, sex, and death are explicit themes. At the insistence of the German Surrealist Hans Bellmer, himself the author of disturbingly erotic images, Schröder-Sonnenstern's drawings were included in the Exposition inteRnatiOnale du Surrialisme (EROS) at the Galerie Daniel Cordier in Paris in 1959. Books were subsequently written about him and he received solo exhibitions in Germany during his lifetime, including shows at the Staddtische Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf (1967) and the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover" (1973) (Private Worlds: Classic Outsider Art from Europe, New York, 1998, p. 31).
