This painting will be included in the forthcoming Renoir catalogue critique being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute and established from the archive funds of François Daulte, Durand-Ruel, Venturi, Vollard and Wildenstein.

Renoir visited La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast of France for an extended stay in the early summer of 1890.

The present work belonged at one time to Maurice Gangnat and was included in the spectacular sale of his collection in 1925. Not only an avid collector of Renoir - the 1925 auction contained no fewer than 160 works by the artist - Gangnat's patronage extended also to Cézanne and Vuillard. Amongst a number of Cézannes in the collection was La Montagne Sainte-Victoire vue de Bibémus (R.837), now part of The Cone Collection in the Baltimore Museum of Art, as well as a Vuillard portait of Gangnat's wife and son from 1907 (S.VII-419).
