Lot Essay
The present work is part of the important Avenue du bois series, which marks the first appearance of the horse as a central subject in Dufy's oeuvre, prefiguring the artist's characteristic interest in racing by several years. The years between 1906 and 1909 constituted a period of stylistic transition for Dufy in which he continuously assimilated the lessons of Cézanne and cubism, as well as the strong colour theories of the fauvists, while moving towards a more personal aesthetic. L'avenue du bois displays Dufy's preoccupation with a systematic composition in which form and colour combine to produce a vibrant and fluid work.
