Lot Essay

This sheet stems from a sketchbook that Picasso filled with drawings inspired by his visits to the Louvre, in the late spring of 1963. He was particularly taken by Rembrandt's Bathsheba, which he re-appropriated with his trademark simplicity of line and sculptural monumentality.
