Lot Essay
A study for the figure of Rhetoric in the ceiling of the Stanza delle Metamorfosi in the Palazzo Doria, Genoa, damaged in 1944 (E. Parma Armani, Perino del Vaga, L'anello mancante, Genoa, 1986, fig. 161).
The attribution of this drawing has been confirmed by Professor Elena Parma and Linda Wolk-Simon on the basis of photographs in communications dated 18 and 20 November 2003. Both scholars connect the drawing to the Palazzo Doria but suggest that some of the pen work and white heightening may possibly have been added by a later hand.
The ceiling, painted by Perino in the late 1520s, is composed of 28 compartments with twelve allegorical figures and sixteen small scenes from Ovid's Methamorphoses.
A copy after the figure of Rhetoric is in the Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe in Rome (E. Parma Armani, op. cit., fig. 165).
The drawing will be included in an article written by Professor Parma for the Atti of the Perino Symposium held in Genoa in 2001.
