Luis Lagarto, born in Spain in 1556, was active in Mexico in 1586-1619. Some of his manuscripts, in poor condition, are kept in the Pinacoteca Virreinal of San Diego in Mexico. The Church of San Diego was founded in 1580, and most of the works there were commissioned for the Church. An Adoration of the Shepherds by Lagarto, dated 1610, is in the Mayer Collection in the Denver Art Museum.
