Lot Essay

James Byam Shaw suggested that Domenico's drawings of animals above a trompe l'oeil ledge can be connected to projected frescoes for the interior frieze of the Villa Tiepolo-Duodo at Zianigo, near Padua (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, pp. 42-3). Byam Shaw dates the decoration of the villa to after Domenico's return from Spain, perhaps as late as the 1790s.
