A preparatory drawing for the background of Philippe de Champaigne's Christ on the Cross entreating his Father painted before 1650 and now in the Louvre (B. Dorival, op. cit, 1976, no. 67). In common with many of his paintings at this period and indeed throughout his career, Champaigne was very concerned about the theological and iconographic accuracy of his composition. This view of Jerusalem is based on the text and engraved plates of Jerónimo de Prado and Juan Battista de Villapando's In Ezechielem explanationies et Apparatus Urbis ac Templi Hiersolymitani, commentariis et imaginibus illustratus, a depiction of Jerusalem based on biblical sources
