Dr. Peter Schatborn kindly confirmed the attribution to Esaias van de Velde on the basis of a photograph, dating the drawing to the early 1620s. Dr. Schatborn compares it to a group reproduced in G. Keyes, Esaias van den Velde 1587-1630, Doornspijk, 1984, nos. D68, D71, D91, D97, D125, D142, D148, D155, D188, D192, D210, D214), but points out that the use of colour in the present drawing is unusual for Esaias and that it may have been added by a later hand.
