Lot Essay

This form was one the most enduring of the Chinese animal tureens. An example in the collection of the Gothenburg Historical Museum, Sweden, is illustrated by S. Roth, Chinese Porcelain, p. 27, where the author notes that it was purchased for Niklas Sahlgren (1701-76), a director of the Swedish East India Co.
