CIRCA 1785
Finely painted, probably in London, with a view of the Abbey ruins, around the back are visible small ships afloat in the bay beyond, on the base the black script initials JC, an interlaced strap handle at the back with floral sprig terminals

Lot Essay

Sold Sotheby's London, 23 February 1958, lot 183. Its companion, initialled AC, was in the Mottahedeh collection, and sold Sotheby's New York, 19 October 2000, lot 207. An abbey was first founded in 657 at Whitby, Yorkshire, on the mouth of the Esk River, and a shipbuilding center. The ruins stand today and remain a romantic tourist destination.
