The Edith built in Newburyport in 1863 by Eben Mason for F. Carow and Co., New York. She was reputedly 1125 tons, and her first master was John H. Childs. Miss Edith Carow was Theodore Roosevelt's second wife, and perhaps the inspiration for this ship's name.
