The exterior naturalistically enamelled and formed as a scallop shell, the flat cover showing yellow iris, roses and morning glories on the exterior and painted inside with small insects hovering above further flowering plants and a gourd vine, the silver mounts gilt inside

Lot Essay

A similar box from the Mottahedeh collection was illustrated by Howard & Ayers, op. cit., p. 637. Another, from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Clark, was included in the Catalogue of the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of the Arts, London 1938; and another, from a private American collection, was sold Christie's, New York, 21 January 2003, lot 332.
