Yunque de Sueños (Anvil of Dreams) is the poetic title that Chillida gave to an exquisite series of sixteen works executed between 1954 and 1966. The title refers to the physical act of making iron sculpture, hammering and forging the material form of the work on the anvil and then shaping and stretching the molten metal into a visual expression of the artist's vision.
Given Chillida's intuitive understanding of the fundamental nature of sculpture, it is, as many commentators have pointed out, ultimately, space itself that is wrought on the anvil, the material form of the sculpture being merely a physical expression of the nature of the space around it.
Yunque de Sueños I is a clear expression of this notion. Looking like flower in full blossom or a hand that has opened to sense the air around it, the gentle forms of this small-scale work seem to caress the vast immaterial dimensionless void around it.
