Lot Essay
The present composition relates to David's Crucifixion of circa 1515 in the Gemaldegalerie, Berlin (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, New York, 1971, no. 186, pl. 197). Gerard David was the last of the so-called early Netherlandish painters who was active during the late 15th and early 16th Century in Bruges, and his Crucifixion was a major work that set the standard for subsequent crucifixions painted by his pupils, such as Adriaen Isenbrandt, whose influence can also be seen in the present work (see for example Friedländer, op. cit., XI, pl. 126 and 127).
