A very fine antique scale model of a French sloop of war
Anonymous (French or American, 19th century)
The hull of this model is built up from the solid, shaped, sanded and faired and painted on the bottom a copper color and the topsides are painted black. The deck of the model is flush with the exception of a whaleback at the bow. The decks are of veneer and has the planking lines drawn onto the surface. At the bow is the figurehead of a man in a period hat finished in gold. The model is fitted with a number of details which include: anchors and anchor chain, pin and fife rails, ladders, stove pipe, cannons on carriages, shot racks, long boat on metal yokes, deck gratings, capstan, companionway, ship's well rigged to the tiller, deck eyes and other details. The model is rigged with three masts and a bowsprit, cross spars, stun'sail booms, trees and tops, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, stays, halyards, ratlines, deadeyes, and other rigging details. The model is displayed on a pair of ebony cradles on a mahogany based board.
