A Napoleonic Prisoner of War ship model of a French Sloop of War Du Teillay**
Anonymous (French, late 18th century)
A well done and detailed bone model of this French ship. The hull of the model is bone planked over a wooden plug, the planking held in place with copper pins. The waist of the model is formed by two rows of ebonized wood with a mahogany strip inlaid down the center. The decks of the model are also planked in bone with copper pins holding the planking in place. At the bow of the model is a carved figure head in the form of an 18th c. bust of a man in a hat of the period. The quarter galleries and transom are simple in form and are decorated with some engraving. The model is well detailed with anchors, pin and fife rails, stove pipe, water barrels, 16 cannons rigged on carriages, capstan with posts, etc. The model is well rigged with three masts, bowsprit, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, deadeyes, French naval flag with Fleur de lis and other rigging details. The model is displayed on a pair of mahogany cradles, in a mahogany framed glass case.
