Two chairs of the present set, inscribed with the date 1812, also with the name of Arch'd McDonald, who is likely to be the Manchester cabinet maker recorded in 1811 in Wood Street (G.Beard and C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p.564).
The Regency chairs, probably supplied the 8th Earl of Haddington (1753-1828) and by descent to the 13th Earl of Haddington, Tyninhame, Scotland, sold Sotheby's house sale 28th-29th September 1987, lot 627.
