Lot Essay

Joseph Pollet (b.1814-d.1870). 'Une Heure de la Nuit' was first exhibited in plaster at the Salon of 1848. A marble version was subsequently commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior and was exhibited at the Salon in 1850 (no.3554) to great acclaim. It was exhibited again at the Exposition Centennale de l'art Francais in 1900. There are three variations on the model. The present figure appears to be an edition by Labroue titled 'L'Etoile de la Nuit', which dispenses with two putti supporting the figure.
