Lot Essay

John Maple opened his 'Wholesale and Retail Drapery Shop' in Tottenham Court Road in 1841. Aiming at an upper-class clientele, by the end of the century, aided by their furniture and fabric catalogues and specimen rooms, they were supplying elegant palaces and mansions both at home and abroad.
