A Rare 17th Century Ivory Cased Set of Six Knives and a Fork
Five knives with maker's mark T Crowned, possibly for Joseph Stanhouse, also marked with the dagger of the cutler's company, circa 1680
Each tapering handle with a near parallel blade, contained in a free standing turned ivory case with a hinged lid (detached) and a button clasp, the top of the lid with an applied silver medallion engraved with a rose - the case 14cm. (5½in.) high.

Lot Essay

A very similar set, consisting of seven knives, is illustrated in British Cutlery An Illustrated History of Design, Evolution and Use, edited by Peter Brown, page 98, number 62. Mr. Brown notes that Ivory stocks of this pattern are rare, and mostly made of lacquered papier-mache or fishskin.
