Lot Essay

Beginning in 1950 Lapicque traveled to Venice at least four times and he was recognized at the 1953 Biennale with the Prix Raoul Dufy. By the late 1950s he turned his attention also to the small Brittany town of Paimpol and the neighboring island of Bréhat. Both areas were especially appealing to the artist offering a dichotomy of landscapes: some areas reminiscent of Ireland, while other areas mirrored the Mediterranean. The works of this period often capture lush landscapes and are typically rendered in strong, vibrant colors as in the present work.

Marc Mettayer and Marie-Lynne Gambus will include this painting in their forthcoming Lapicque catalogue raisonné.
