Lot Essay

Peter Behrens first studied painting in the last decades of the 19th century before becoming a leading figure in German design and architecture in the first half of the 20th Century. Behrens was a pioneer of total design - from structure down to cutlery. In Darmstadt he designed and built his own house for the darmstad 1901 exhibition. Later he was appointed architect and product designer for the firm A.E.G. in 1907.
